Concrete recognition of Calthorpe House
November 2009
Calthorpe House has been awarded a commendation in this year’s ‘Concrete Society 2009 Excellence in Concrete Awards’.
Recognising and celebrating use in the excellence of concrete, the accolade was awarded to Webb Gray Architects for their impressive use of concrete cladding and glass in the 107,044 sq ft Grade A offices.
With a design intended to respect the surrounding of The Calthorpe Estate but reinterpret it in a contemporary manner, the construction used characteristic building materials and elements; including a masonry colour and texture that complemented the historic 19th Century white rendered properties along Calthorpe Road and Frederick Road.
“Calthorpe House has been successfully designed and built as a contemporary office building that is at ease with the built heritage of the area and has excellent sustainability credentials,” commented the judges.
“It is the size of the panels with complex reinforcement design and pre-installed windows, and the high degree of pre-fabrication that make this building stand out.”
The whole operation of erecting 386 panels took only 16 weeks and was delivered on time and within budget.
